Background information
Monolithic storage includes a NAND style chip a memory controller and a USB port/controller, similarly to how EMMC integrates a controller to allow for firmware to boot off it.
Monolithic storage devices feature these fourth components to allow for data stored and accessed on the device directly through a USB port without the need for external hardware (minus the USB port and device)
